Airwall Xhaust and Containment System | IICRC Master Tech’s 1st Thoughts!

To properly start this off… who am I, and why should you care about my thoughts on this piece of equipment? My name is Jason, and I’m an IICRC Master Certified Technician with over 15 years of experience in the mitigation and restoration industry. Before that, I was in law enforcement, and I coached lacrosse.

I’m sharing this with you hoping that my personality comes through in the text. I’m a no-nonsense kind of guy who lives for efficiency and quality of work. So, when a manufacturer of equipment makes a piece of gear that can simplify my life, I like to share it with everyone—especially my competitors. While I enjoy fixing their mistakes (it’s just easy money), I can’t do everything myself, and I need more (me + golf) or (me + fishing) time!

AirWall Xhaust and Containment System

What is Containment?

Containment is a method of creating a barrier between two spaces. It allows for the removal of affected materials or work to be done in a designated space without sacrificing other areas of a building. This includes but is not limited to dust control, airborne particulate contamination, negative air systems for the purpose of maintaining adequate air quality throughout a project.

AirWall Xhaust and containment system provides a solution to these necessary requirements in a faster more cost-efficient manner. By eliminating the need for time consuming “prep” work to be don’t to existing windowsills, and reducing the number of consumables needed to complete this process the equation of time = money has never been more accurate.

Your probably thinking “containment is containment” who cares…you’ve never been more wrong.

Airwall Xhaust and Containment System | On the Job Performance:

The Job

2nd story Condo | New Jersey | Kitchen mold job

First-time homeowners bought a Condo and prior to moving in noticed some discoloration under the kitchen sink. After my initial inspection and discussions with the property owners we decided to be as non-intrusive as possible to make their new home safe to occupy. This consisted of setting up negative air via an air scrubber, followed by the removal of affected side panels and cabinet floor followed by deep cleaning of remainder of cabinetry.

First Impressions

Scenario 1. Traditional negative air setup

The containment process usually starts off by masking off an opening, in this case it would be the oversized windows in the breakfast nook.  After using 3” painter’s tape to cover the window trim (to protect the painted finish) we then apply 2-sided tape.  At this point we unroll 6 Mil plastic, measure the opening and precut the desired size of plastic to cover the opening. Then we attach lay flat poly ducting to the air scrubber, create a X pattern in the 6 mil and insert the lay flat through creating the negative air. Simple right?

Scenario 2. Airwall Xhaust System

  • Attach Ducting to air scrubber
  • Attach ducting to air wall exhaust and tighten with the cinch
  • Place air wall exhaust in window opening
  • Turn on air scrubber and watch the exhaust system auto inflate and seal the window opening.

My overall Thoughts

Thought #1

The amount of time it has taken to implement the Airwall Xhaust and Containment system is more than half of the time it takes to complete the traditional way. The window unit expands to fit several different window sizes and types. Take down is even faster and easier that the installation

Thought #2

6 Mil Poly, 3” painter’s tape and double-sided restoration tape are not inexpensive items.  These items are not billable expenses for insurance companies.  (it’s lost revenue)

Let’s bill for what we use and not use what we can’t bill for… what a concept!

Does it do the thing it’s supposed to do?

Yes, and it does what it is supposed to do better than any other product I have tried to date.

Ease of Use

The only requirements needed are the ability to open a window and turn on an air scrubber. It’s actually easier than inflating an air mattress.

If you have problems, try checking out the videos at www.zeppelinguys.com. If you’re still having issues just update your resume, this isn’t the profession for you.

Closing Thoughts and Overall Rating

Too many times, we have experienced secondary damage from using tape on painted surfaces.  Even painter’s tape can have adverse reactions to unstable conditions like high humidity in homes. We have experienced paint chipping/peeling, wallpaper damage, and the ever-popular tape just not adhering to some surfaces (oil-based paint, stained wood, brick or stone surfaces.

Now you can avoid any potential hazards with a simple fast and efficient method.

These units come in a handy zippered storage bag which makes transportation a breeze, the take down method is as simple as turning off the air scrubber and closing the window.
